The Foundry FTLX1412D3BCL-F1 is a hot-pluggable 10 Gigabit XFP optical transceiver module compliant with the XFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA). It is engineered for 10GBASE-LR and 10GBASE-LW applications, supporting data rates from 9.95 Gb/s to 10.5 Gb/s. The module operates at a nominal wavelength of 1310 nm with an uncooled distributed feedback (DFB) laser transmitter and a PIN photodiode receiver, providing reliable performance over single-mode fiber up to 10 km.This transceiver features a duplex LC optical connector and is designed for use with ITU-T G.652 single-mode fiber (SMF). It delivers an average transmitter output power ranging from -8.2 dBm to +0.5 dBm and offers receiver sensitivity of -14.4 dBm or better. The electrical interface uses a 30-pin XFP connector with XFI-compliant differential signals at 10 Gbps. Internal AC coupling is provided on both transmitter and receiver paths, and the module operates from a single +3.3 V power supply with typical power dissipation below 3.5 W.
Digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM) is implemented according to the XFP MSA via a two-wire I2C interface. This allows real-time monitoring and reporting of key parameters, including transmitted optical power, received optical power, laser bias current, module supply voltage, and case temperature. Programmable warning and alarm thresholds enable proactive fault management and performance optimization. Additional functions include transmitter disable control and loss-of-signal (LOS) detection.
The FTLX1412D3BCL-F1 supports both Ethernet and SONET/SDH protocols, making it suitable for a variety of applications in metropolitan area networks, enterprise backbones, data center interconnects, and telecom transport systems. It is compatible with host equipment from Foundry Networks (Brocade) as well as other vendors supporting standard XFP ports in routers, switches, and optical transport platforms.
For deployment, the hot-pluggable design permits insertion and removal without interrupting host system operation. The module is rated for commercial temperature operation (typically 0°C to +70°C), with adequate airflow required around the XFP cage in high-density environments to ensure thermal stability. It complies with Class 1 laser safety standards, relevant EMC requirements, and RoHS directives.
During operation, the transceiver performs automatic rate adaptation where supported by the host device and maintains internal calibration for accurate diagnostic reporting. Recommended connections use duplex single-mode fiber patch cords with LC connectors, ensuring low insertion loss and proper fiber cleaning procedures to prevent performance degradation from contamination.
The module is intended for point-to-point links requiring 10 km reach on single-mode fiber. It facilitates cost-effective upgrades of existing 10G infrastructure and supports integration into network management systems via standard interfaces on the host platform. In case of link issues, diagnostic data can be used to identify problems related to fiber quality, connectors, or environmental factors.
