Description

The Opnext SFP/2G5U/D1534.25U Compatible Multirate Singlemode Transceiver is a hot-pluggable SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) optical module designed for multirate operation in SDH/SONET, Fibre Channel, and other telecom/datacom applications. It supports line rates from 155 Mbit/s (OC-3/STM-1) up to 2.67 Gbit/s (OC-48/STM-16 with FEC or 2G Fibre Channel), making it suitable for flexible deployments where multiple protocols and speeds must be supported on the same hardware. This transceiver operates at a nominal wavelength of 1534.25 nm (C-band DWDM channel) with a narrow spectral width suitable for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems. It uses a high-performance Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser transmitter and a sensitive PIN photodiode receiver, optimized for single-mode fiber (SMF 9/125 µm). Depending on the link budget and platform, the module typically supports reaches from 40 km to 80 km or more when paired with appropriate optical amplifiers and dispersion compensation.

The module complies with SFP MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) and relevant ITU-T recommendations for STM-16/OC-48 interfaces. It handles framed SONET/SDH signals with full section, line, and path overhead processing when installed in a compatible host platform. Multirate capability is achieved through rate selection via the host system or internal auto-negotiation, allowing seamless operation across OC-3/STM-1, OC-12/STM-4, OC-48/STM-16, and equivalent Fibre Channel rates.

Optical connectivity is provided via a duplex LC connector. Key features include Loss of Signal (LOS) detection and assertion, automatic laser shutdown (ALS) for Class 1 eye safety, and digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM/DOM) compliant with SFF-8472. Real-time parameters such as transmitted and received optical power, laser bias current, temperature, and supply voltage are accessible via the I2C interface for advanced performance monitoring and fault isolation.

The transceiver uses the standard 20-pin SFP electrical interface with a 3.3 V power supply and low power consumption (typically < 1.5 W), enabling high-density card configurations. It supports hot-swap insertion and removal without service interruption in redundant setups. Environmental specifications usually cover a commercial temperature range of 0°C to +70°C, with options for extended or industrial grades in certain variants, along with high humidity tolerance and built-in ESD protection.

This multirate DWDM SFP is primarily used in metro, regional, and core transport networks for wavelength-specific links in DWDM systems, add-drop multiplexers, or as a tributary/up-link interface. It ensures full interoperability with Opnext and third-party compatible platforms while integrating with network management systems for remote provisioning, alarm reporting, and detailed performance data collection (including BIP error monitoring and signal quality thresholds).

Installation requires proper fiber cleaning, correct Tx/Rx polarity, and adherence to minimum bend radius for patch cords. The module provides a compact, cost-effective, and wavelength-specific solution for high-capacity single-mode optical transport, particularly in environments requiring precise ITU-grid DWDM channel spacing and multirate flexibility.
