Descripción
The Nortel Networks NTEU14AA is a 34/45 Mbit/s electrical tributary card designed for the OPTera Metro 3500, TN-4XE, OME 4100, and other Nortel multiservice SDH/SONET platforms. It provides high-density termination for PDH signals at 34.368 Mbit/s (E3) and 44.736 Mbit/s (DS3) rates. The card typically supports three or more independent bidirectional electrical ports (exact port count depends on hardware revision and shelf configuration), each compliant with ITU-T G.703 for 34 Mbit/s and Telcordia/ANSI standards for 45 Mbit/s. It uses 75 Ohm unbalanced coaxial interfaces (BNC or 1.0/2.3 connectors) with line coding HDB3 for E3 and B3ZS for DS3. The module performs mapping of 34 Mbit/s or 45 Mbit/s signals into VC-3 or TU-3 virtual containers, enabling efficient grooming and cross-connection within the STM-1, STM-4, or higher-order aggregate bandwidth of the host platform.
The NTEU14AA occupies a dedicated tributary slot in the OPTera Metro shelf and interfaces electrically with the backplane for payload transport, timing synchronization, and management communication. It supports both framed and unframed modes, retiming functions, and comprehensive performance monitoring in accordance with ITU-T G.826 and G.828 recommendations. Key performance metrics collected include BIP errors, errored seconds (ES), severely errored seconds (SES), and unavailable seconds (UAS) for each port.
Operational features include Loss of Signal (LOS), Alarm Indication Signal (AIS), and Remote Defect Indication detection on every port. The card supports line and equipment loopbacks for diagnostic testing and generates detailed alarms forwarded to the shelf controller and network element management system. It also provides jitter attenuation and wander control to maintain signal quality.
Power is supplied from the shelf backplane at nominal -48 V DC with optimized consumption for high-density deployments. The module is engineered for carrier-class reliability and supports hot-swappable replacement in configurations with redundant power and control. Environmental specifications follow standard central office requirements: operating temperature range 0°C to +55°C and humidity tolerance up to 95% non-condensing. Built-in surge and ESD protection ensure stable operation in telecom environments.
This tributary card is primarily used for adding or dropping 34 Mbit/s (E3) and 45 Mbit/s (DS3) circuits in metro and regional SDH/SONET networks. It enables efficient transport of legacy PDH leased lines, video, or data services over the optical backbone while allowing seamless grooming with lower- and higher-order tributaries. The NTEU14AA is fully compatible with Nortel’s OPTera Metro platform (now supported under Ciena) and integrates with the element management system for remote provisioning, configuration, and performance data collection.
Installation requires proper 75 Ohm coaxial cabling, correct connector termination, and impedance matching verification. The card offers a reliable, high-density solution for 34/45 Mbit/s tributary access in legacy Nortel multiservice transport systems still in operation worldwide.
