Description

The Nortel Networks NTEX22BB (often referenced with vintage suffixes such as -63) is an Enhanced Integrated Processor and Frame Bus Interface Card (IPF Bus INTFC) designed for the Nortel DMS-100 and DMS-200 family of digital circuit switches. It provides the critical 8-Megabyte (or higher in later revisions) processing capacity and high-speed Frame Bus interface required for increased system performance and capacity expansion. This card integrates an enhanced processor complex with the Frame Bus Interface function, enabling support for larger configurations including higher line and trunk capacities, expanded ISUP trunk groups, and advanced features introduced in NA004 through NA008 software loads and later. It is mandatory for certain capacity upgrades, such as expanding DMS-200 tandem offices beyond traditional limits or supporting enhanced Link Peripheral Processor (LPP) configurations.

The NTEX22BB occupies a dedicated slot in the DMS-100 SuperNode or peripheral processor frames. It interfaces directly with the system Frame Bus for high-speed inter-processor communication and data transfer between the Central Control Complex and peripheral modules. The card handles call processing tasks, database management, and real-time signaling operations with improved throughput compared to earlier processor cards.

Key features include support for 8-Megabyte memory configurations, enhanced message handling on the IPF (Integrated Processor and Frame) bus, and compatibility with various DMS-100 peripherals such as Enhanced Network (ENET), Link Peripheral Processors, and Subscriber Carrier Modules. It provides comprehensive alarm and status reporting to the Maintenance and Administration Position (MAP) terminal, including processor load, bus errors, and synchronization issues.

The module is engineered for carrier-class reliability with redundant configurations in high-availability DMS-100 offices. It derives power from the shelf backplane at nominal -48 V DC. Environmental specifications align with central office requirements: operating temperature range typically 0°C to +50°C and high humidity tolerance. Built-in protection against electrical surges and ESD is incorporated.

This Enhanced Processor and Frame Bus Interface Card is primarily used in legacy Nortel DMS-100/200 switches still in service for capacity upgrades, feature enhancements, and maintenance of large-scale local and tandem switching systems. It enables operators to expand subscriber lines, trunks, and advanced services (such as ISDN, CCS7, and TR-303) without full shelf replacement.

Installation requires proper seating in the designated processor slot, verification of backplane connections, and software compatibility checks through the DMS-100 maintenance software. The NTEX22BB remains a key hardware component for sustaining and expanding installed DMS-100 infrastructure worldwide.
