Extreme Networks 45014 BlackDiamond 8800 Switch Management Module (SMMi)

The Extreme Networks 45014, also known as the Switch Management Module (SMMi), is the primary control and management engine for the BlackDiamond 8800 series modular switch chassis. This module is responsible for the overall system configuration, high-level control plane processing, and the execution of the ExtremeXOS modular operating system. It provides the centralized intelligence required to manage all installed line cards, fabric modules, and power supplies within the chassis. The SMMi architecture is optimized for low-latency system initialization and rapid processing of routing protocols, ensuring high performance in enterprise and carrier-grade core networks.The 45014 module features an integrated processor and high-capacity memory to support large routing tables, complex Access Control Lists (ACLs), and advanced Layer 2/3 protocols including OSPF, BGP, and EAPS. For management connectivity, the module is equipped with a dedicated 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet port for out-of-band management and a console port for local CLI access. It also includes an internal flash storage system for maintaining multiple firmware images and configuration files. When deployed in a dual-SMM configuration, the 45014 supports hitless failover and stateful switchover (SSO), providing maximum system availability by allowing the standby module to take over control without interrupting active traffic.
