PLRXPL-VE-SG4-62
Description

The JDSU PLRXPL-VE-SG4-62 is a hot-pluggable SFP optical transceiver module designed for multi-rate shortwave Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet applications. It operates at a nominal wavelength of 850 nm using a VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) transmitter and a PIN photodiode receiver. The module supports data rates of 1.0625 Gbps, 2.125 Gbps, and 4.25 Gbps Fibre Channel, as well as 1.25 Gbps for Gigabit Ethernet, providing full backward compatibility with lower-speed infrastructure. This transceiver delivers reliable short-reach connectivity up to 500 m over OM3 multi-mode fiber (or up to 300–400 m on OM2/OM3 MMF depending on the data rate and fiber quality). It complies with the SFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA), FC-PI-2/FC-PI-3 Fibre Channel Physical Interface standards, IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-SX, and related multi-rate specifications. The module features a duplex LC optical connector and is intended exclusively for multi-mode fiber (MMF) applications. The electrical interface uses a standard 20-pin SFP connector with high-speed differential CML signals. It operates from a single +3.3 V power supply with low power consumption, typically below 1 W.

Digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM/DOM) functions are implemented according to SFF-8472 via the two-wire I2C serial interface. This enables real-time monitoring and reporting of key parameters including transmitted optical power, received optical power, laser bias current, supply voltage, and module temperature. Programmable warning and alarm thresholds support proactive performance monitoring and fault detection. Additional features include transmitter disable (TX_DISABLE) and loss-of-signal (LOS) indication.

Optical performance meets Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet requirements for jitter tolerance, extinction ratio, and eye mask compliance across supported rates. The PLRXPL-VE-SG4-62 is classified as a Class 1 laser product and complies with RoHS, EMC, and ESD standards. It is engineered for high port density and reliable operation in storage area networks (SAN) and enterprise environments.

The transceiver is compatible with a wide range of SFP-enabled Fibre Channel switches, directors, host bus adapters, and Ethernet equipment from various vendors. It is ideal for intra-rack or short-reach connections in data centers, campus networks, and SAN fabrics over existing multi-mode fiber infrastructure.

Installation is simplified by the hot-pluggable SFP form factor, allowing insertion or removal without powering down the host equipment. The module supports commercial or extended operating temperatures and requires minimal airflow for thermal management. Proper cleaning and inspection of the duplex LC connectors are essential to prevent contamination and maintain optimal link performance.

During operation, the module automatically negotiates the supported data rate with the connected device and provides calibrated digital diagnostic data for accurate reporting. Recommended fiber patch cables are duplex multi-mode LC-to-LC with OM2 or OM3 fiber for maximum reach. The module integrates seamlessly with host management systems through standard SNMP or CLI for remote monitoring of optical parameters and link status.

This shortwave SFP transceiver offers a reliable, cost-effective, and standards-compliant solution for multi-rate optical connectivity in Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet environments.
