The Nortel Networks NTTP03BF is a hot-pluggable SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) optical transceiver module designed for short-reach OC-48/STM-16 applications in Nortel optical transmission and multiservice platforms, including the OME6500 series and compatible SDH/SONET equipment. It provides a single bidirectional optical interface operating at the nominal line rate of 2.488 Gbit/s (OC-48/STM-16), with support for rates from approximately 100 Mbit/s to 2.67 Gbit/s depending on the host system configuration.This module is classified as Short Reach SR-1 per SONET/SDH standards. It utilizes a 1310 nm Fabry-Perot (FP) laser transmitter and a PIN photodiode receiver, optimized for single-mode fiber (SMF 9/125 µm). The typical transmission distance reaches up to 2 km with a link power budget of approximately 8 dB. Transmitter optical output power is typically in the range of -9 dBm to -3 dBm, while receiver sensitivity supports a low bit error rate (better than 10⁻¹²) over the specified short-reach distance.

The NTTP03BF complies with relevant SONET OC-48 and SDH STM-16 specifications (ITU-T G.957, Telcordia GR-253), including framed signal handling with section, line, and path overhead processing when installed in a compatible shelf. It supports concatenated payloads (STS-48c / VC-4-16c) and can be used for transport or tributary interfaces in grooming and cross-connect applications.

Optical connectivity is provided via a duplex LC connector. The transceiver incorporates Loss of Signal (LOS) detection, automatic laser shutdown (ALS) for Class 1 laser safety compliance, and digital diagnostic monitoring (DDM) functions compliant with SFF-8472. Real-time parameters such as transmitted/received optical power, laser bias current, temperature, and supply voltage are reported to the network management system.

The module uses the standard 20-pin SFP electrical interface with a 3.3 V power supply and low power consumption (typically below 1 W), making it suitable for high-density line card deployments. It supports hot-swap insertion and removal without service interruption in redundant configurations. Environmental specifications usually cover a commercial operating temperature range of 0°C to +70°C, with high humidity tolerance and integrated ESD/surge protection.

The NTTP03BF is primarily deployed for short-reach intra-office or inter-facility connections between optical add-drop multiplexers, terminal equipment, or as a cost-effective short-distance trunk interface in metro transport networks. It ensures full interoperability with other Nortel SFP modules within the same platform and integrates seamlessly with the element management system for remote provisioning, performance monitoring (including BIP-8 error checking, signal degrade/fail thresholds), and alarm forwarding.
