It provides forced-air cooling for the subrack and installed cards to maintain safe operating temperatures under full load conditions.The unit contains multiple high-reliability DC brushless fans arranged in a redundant configuration. It draws power directly from the shelf backplane, typically at -48 V DC, and includes integrated speed control and monitoring circuitry. The fan unit continuously reports status information such as fan speed, rotation, and failure alarms to the shelf controller via the system management bus. In case of a single fan failure, the remaining fans automatically increase speed to compensate, maintaining adequate airflow and triggering a minor alarm. Complete fan failure or loss of communication generates a major alarm.
The NTCA85BA is hot-swappable, allowing replacement without powering down the shelf or interrupting traffic in systems equipped with redundant fan units. Airflow direction is front-to-rear (or as defined by the specific shelf design), with replaceable or washable air filters in some configurations to prevent dust accumulation.
