The Nortel Networks NTCX11AA is a fan module specifically designed for the Nortel DMS-100 (Digital Multiplex System) family of digital circuit switches. It provides forced-air cooling for the DMS-100 frames, including the central control complex, peripheral modules, and other high-density equipment shelves in central office environments.The NTCX11AA contains multiple DC brushless fans in a redundant configuration to ensure continuous airflow even in the event of a single fan failure. It draws power from the DMS-100 shelf backplane at nominal -48 V DC and incorporates speed control circuitry that automatically adjusts fan speed based on temperature or load conditions. The module continuously monitors fan rotation and reports status, including fan speed, failure detection, and thermal conditions, to the DMS-100 maintenance subsystem via the backplane communication bus. Upon detection of a fan fault, the system generates appropriate alarms (minor or major) and may increase the speed of remaining fans to maintain adequate cooling.
This fan module is hot-swappable in supported DMS-100 configurations, allowing replacement without powering down the switch or interrupting call processing. Airflow is typically directed front-to-rear, with provisions for air filters (replaceable or washable in some frames) to minimize dust ingress. The mechanical design includes alignment guides, secure latches, and robust connectors for reliable insertion into the dedicated fan slots located at the top or bottom of DMS-100 equipment frames.
Key operational characteristics include sufficient airflow capacity to support full-load operation of DMS-100 shelves handling up to thousands of lines and trunks, low acoustic noise levels suitable for central office installations, and high mean time between failures (MTBF). The unit includes over-current protection, reverse polarity protection, and thermal safeguards to prevent damage under abnormal conditions.
The NTCX11AA is an essential cooling component for maintaining the reliability and performance of the DMS-100 switch, which can serve from 1,000 to over 100,000 subscriber lines. Proper operation requires clear intake and exhaust paths, periodic inspection and cleaning of air filters, and adherence to the DMS-100 environmental specifications (operating temperature typically 0°C to +50°C). The module integrates with the DMS-100 Maintenance and Administration Position (MAP) for centralized alarm monitoring and inventory management.
Installation involves aligning the module with the frame guides, firmly seating the backplane connectors, and securing the latches. Replacement should be performed promptly upon fan failure alarms to avoid overheating of critical components such as the central control complex or line/trunk modules.
