Descripción
The Nortel Networks NTEU12AA is a 2 Mbit/s 120 Ohm tributary card designed for the OPTera Metro 3500, TN-4XE, and other Nortel multiservice SDH/SONET platforms. It provides 21 independent bidirectional 2 Mbit/s (E1) electrical interfaces compliant with ITU-T G.703 and G.704 standards. Each port operates at a nominal line rate of 2.048 Mbit/s with 120 Ohm balanced impedance using DB-37 or high-density connectors (depending on the shelf variant). The card supports both framed and unframed E1 signals, including CRC-4 multiframe structure for error monitoring. It performs mapping of 2 Mbit/s signals into VC-12 virtual containers and TU-12 tributary units, enabling efficient grooming and cross-connection within the STM-1 / STM-4 / STM-16 aggregate bandwidth of the host platform.
The NTEU12AA occupies a dedicated tributary slot in the OPTera Metro shelf and interfaces electrically with the backplane for data transport, clocking synchronization, and management communication. It supports retiming, jitter attenuation, and performance monitoring functions per ITU-T G.826 and G.828 recommendations. Comprehensive performance data including BIP errors, errored seconds (ES), severely errored seconds (SES), and unavailable seconds (UAS) are collected and reported to the shelf controller.
Key operational features include Loss of Signal (LOS), Alarm Indication Signal (AIS), and Remote Alarm Indication (RAI) detection on each port. The card generates and forwards alarms to the network element management system for centralized fault management. It also supports loopback functions (line and equipment loopbacks) for diagnostic testing without external test equipment.
Power is supplied from the shelf backplane at nominal -48 V DC with low power consumption. The module is engineered for carrier-class reliability and supports hot-swappable replacement in redundant configurations where applicable. Environmental specifications follow standard telecom requirements: operating temperature range 0°C to +55°C, humidity tolerance up to 95% non-condensing, and built-in protection against electrical surges and ESD.
This tributary card is primarily used for adding or dropping 21 × 2 Mbit/s (E1) circuits in metro and access SDH networks. It enables efficient transport and grooming of voice, leased-line, and data services over the optical SDH backbone. The NTEU12AA is fully compatible with Nortel’s OPTera Metro platform and integrates with the element management system for remote provisioning, configuration, and detailed performance monitoring.
Installation requires proper cabling with 120 Ohm twisted-pair cables, correct pin assignments on the connectors, and verification of impedance matching. The card provides a reliable and high-density solution for E1 tributary access in legacy Nortel (now Ciena-supported) multiservice transport systems.
