The Nortel Networks NTHW81AA is a high-density 32-Port E1 TDM Functional Processor (FP) Card designed for the Nortel Passport MSS 15000 multiservice switching platform. It provides 32 independent E1 (2.048 Mbps) ports for TDM voice and data services, enabling efficient circuit emulation, grooming, and interworking between legacy TDM networks and ATM/packet domains.This line interface module supports standard E1 framing (G.703/G.704) with HDB3 or AMI line coding and up to 30/31 channels per port. It performs real-time TDM processing, including framing, signaling (CAS/CCS), echo cancellation support, and circuit emulation services (CES) for transport over ATM. The card is optimized for high-capacity voice trunking, PSTN interconnection, and multiservice aggregation in carrier environments.

The NTHW81AA integrates directly with the Passport 15000 backplane and fabric modules, delivering non-blocking performance for TDM-to-ATM conversion and traffic management. It supports various AAL types (primarily AAL1 for structured/unstructured CES) and works seamlessly with other FP cards for converged voice, video, and data services.

For installation and maintenance, the module occupies a dedicated line card slot in the Passport MSS 15000 chassis. It is a field-replaceable unit with robust backplane connectors. The card operates on standard -48 VDC telecom power and includes front-panel indicators for port status, link activity, alarms, and module health. Physical E1 interfaces are typically provided via high-density connectors (often requiring external termination panels or cables such as NTFP19AL series).

The card is engineered for carrier-class reliability in central office environments, complying with NEBS-level requirements for electromagnetic compatibility, thermal performance, and high availability.
